In line with recent trends in education across the Isle of Man, St. Ninian’s High School allows students to bring in and when appropriate use mobile devices in lessons to support their learning.
Students do not have to do this, so if they decide to bring their device to school it is their personal responsibility to look after it carefully and not the school’s responsibility. Also we all have a responsibility to make sure mobile devices are used sensibly and in positive ways. As such, we encourage parents and students the read the detailed Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and also sign and return the student acceptance form.
If students are found to be misusing their devices in school, the following rules and sanctions will be applied:
All students have been informed on several occasions that their mobile devices should be switched off and put away unless a member of staff gives them permission to use them in the lesson. If a phone then accidently goes off in lesson a further warning will be issued to the individual and group but no further action taken unless it happens again.
Sanction Level 1 – First Offence
Any student who is caught breaking the AUP agreement will have their mobile device taken off them by the member of staff and it will be placed in the School Office until the end of the School day. The student can collect it at 3.15pm and a text will be sent home.
Having the mobile device out in class/using it to text etc. without permission
Using a mobile device in the Dining Hall or in other restricted areas
Low level inappropriate use, silly issues and behaviour around the building
Sanction Level 2 – Second Offence
Any student who is caught breaking the AUP agreement again will have their mobile device taken off them by the member of staff and it will be placed in the safe in the School Office until parents collect it. Parents will be informed by text that their son/daughter is now banned from bringing in their mobile device for 2 weeks.
Sanction Level 3 – Repeat Offences
Any student who is caught repeatedly breaking the AUP agreement will have their mobile device taken off them by the member of staff and it will be placed in the School Office for parental collection. Parents will be informed by text and requested to make an appointment with the HOY to discuss the persistent disregard for the AUP which will effectively be cancelled whilst a longer ban is imposed.
Sanction Level 4 – Serious Offences
Any offence deemed as serious by Senior Staff – such as video/pictures of class situations, taking or posting inappropriate images to each other or onto the Internet etc – are likely to result in suspension, bans on mobile device use, and even being reported to the Police. These incidents will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Parents will be informed by telephone.
Notes : If a student refuses to hand over their mobile device to a teacher they will be sent to Senior Staff. A refusal to hand over the mobile device to Senior staff will result in a suspension.
This is not a comprehensive list and Senior Staff can adjust the sanctions to individual situations and events.
It is hoped that parents will fully support the School in its efforts to integrate mobile devices safely into the education environment of St. Ninian’s High School.
